The Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune

The Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. It was established as ‘Film Institute of India’ in 1960. Later, it was rechristened as “The Film and Television Institute of India” in 1971. The Television Wing, earlier located at the Mandi House, New Delhi was shifted to Pune in the early seventies, bringing together the training in film and television under a common roof. At its inception in 1974, the Television wing was concerned with the provision of in-service training to personnel from Doordarshan. This Wing has in recent years launched a one-year course in Television.

The FTII is a member of CILECT, an international association of film schools. Every year, around 5,000 graduates from various parts of the country apply for admission to various PG diploma and certificate courses at FTII. The total number of seats in the 11 courses is 132, with each course having 12 seats.

Mr. Shyam Benegal, Mr. Mrinal Sen, Mr. Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Mr. Mahesh Bhatt, Mr. Girish Karnad, Mr. Vinod Khanna and Prof. U.R. Ananthamurthy are some of the well-known personalities who, in the past, had served as Chairman of the Governing Council of FTII.  Mr. Saeed Mirza is currently the Chairman of the Governing Council.

Note : (1.) In a year TV course will have on an average 40 weeks class. (2) In a year Film course will have on an average 44 weeks class.

Scholarship

The institute offers a limited number of scholarships to deserving students in the three year Diploma courses in Film and Television and One Year Certificate Course in Television. The scholarships are awarded at the beginning of the year based on the performance at the time of admission and later based on the performance in the annual examination in theory, practical and projects. Various state governments also award scholarships to student belonging to their States. Besides these there are a number of memorial awards instituted by individuals or trusts.
